Half-Life: Rhythmic Fractals is a rhythmic exercise / musical process meant to stretch the limits of notation, human performance, and computer playback. The piece follows a simple concept: nest quintuplets until the software refuses to nest further. This process functions as a musical imitation of the radioactive decay of atoms and/or the mathematical pattern of fractals.

Half-Life became the framework of this compilation, urging other Midwest composers to explore the potential of music without physical restraints. What’s more, how can composers construct a piece for the sole purpose of being physically impossible to recreate on the instruments in which they were written for?

Ryann Daisy Swimmer is an American composer, performer, and curator from Minneapolis, Minnesota, whose musical ethos focuses on the in-between, the blurred lines, and the insignificant.

As a composer, Swimmer brings their knowledge of theory-heavy composition and instinctual popular music together to create music that could be categorized as classically-influenced experimental music, “indie-classical”, or something else entirely.

As curator and co-founder of (minus) hall, they bring the same philosophy to concerts — ditching the formalities of concert etiquette and leaving the performers to connect with audiences in unconventional spaces.

When they are not busy performing guitar soundscapes in strangers’ basements, Swimmer spends most of their time feeding their rabbit bananas and searching for queer subtext in pre-21st century media.
