The -or series is a collection of works in which the performer explores sonic output via nontraditional inputs in the form of everyday objects that many people use without realizing that they are creating a sound -- mechanical keyboards, cars, video game controllers, etc.

initiator deviates from this formula slightly by being a piece in which the user is aware of the sound being made. However, like previous works, the performer has little to no control over what sounds are made, only whether or not they are made at all.

Every classical chord quality (major, minor, diminished, etc.) has been arranged in every key in initiator and then the notes are shuffled randomly within the key, resulting in a sound in which the performer has little control over the final product.

initiator refers to the product at large. Future renditions of this piece can be categorized and addressed by the performer's choosing; in this instance the composer has decided to organize arrangements by lettering, hence initiator [] and initiator [a].

Ryan Schneider is a tubist and composer based in Minneapolis MN, with an interest in electroacoustic brass techniques, human-machine interfacing, and performance philosophy. He studied under Dr. Jeff Funderburk and Dr. Jesse Orth at the University of Northern Iowa, and his current projects include playing tuba in The Gates of Ballard, being a general nuisance in Montezuma's Grenades, and working on a solo album of solo tuba music written by queer composers.
