about
Working in notation software has very few joys, but one of them I have found over the years is pushing the program to absurd limits and watching Sibelius implode into something strangely beautiful. Both Xylem458 and Robot Lute are almost a decade old at this point but were experiments (or rather, challenges from friends!) to find ways to transform the limited MIDI playback of Sibelius into surreal and surprising moments of music. In Xylem458, MIDI percussion blurs into ecstatic outbursts of sound, played so fast that they sound like singing. In Robot Lute, cryptic tablature and impossible guitar figures become a joyful robotic jam session at the limits of human perception or understanding.
Jonathan Posthuma (b. 1989) is a composer of innovative and interdisciplinary chamber works living in Saint Paul, Minnesota. His musical style seeks to combine lyricism, evocative imagery, and intense emotional contrasts while maintaining clarity in musical symbolism, form, and function at their deepest levels. He is often inspired by natural landscapes, improvisation, spirituality, and visual art in his compositions and his largest project is Paul Klee : Painted Songs, an ongoing collection of chamber music inspired by the paintings of Paul Klee.
